Audi Q7: Front Thorax Airbag with Igniter, Removing and Installing

Mandatory Replacement Parts

  • Bolts - Front Thorax Airbag with Igniter

Removing

  WARNING

  • Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to → Chapter "Safety Precautions for Pyrotechnic Components".
  • Follow the additional safety precautions when working with the thorax airbag. Refer to → Chapter "Additional Thorax Airbag Safety Precautions".
  • Follow all regulations when disposing of pyrotechnic components. Refer to → Chapter "Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storing, Transporting and Disposing (Pyrotechnic Components)".

- Remove the backrest cover. Refer to → Chapter "Backrest Cover, Removing and Installing".

- Move the front seat to all the way forward and move the backrest toward the front.

- Disconnect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on. Refer to → Electrical Equipment; Rep. Gr.27; Battery; Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.

Seat without Pneumatic Components

- Disengage the lower, upper and side molding from the backrest frame -arrows A and B-.

- Remove the cushion from the backrest in the area of the thorax airbag.

Seat with Pneumatic Components

- Disengage the lower, upper and side molding from the backrest frame -arrows-.

- Remove the cushion from the backrest in the area of the thorax airbag.

Continuation for All Seats

  WARNING

Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". This can be done by briefly touching the door striker pin, for example.

- Release the connector lock -2- with a small screwdriver in direction of -arrow-.

- Disconnect the connector -1- on the thorax airbag igniter.

- Carefully push the cover with the cushion in the area of the thorax airbag as far forward as possible.

- Remove the bolt -4-.

- Disengage the thorax airbag -1- with the hooks -2- from the backrest frame -3-.

- Remove the thorax airbag upward from the pocket sewn into the cover.

Installing

  WARNING

  • Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to → Chapter "Safety Precautions for Pyrotechnic Components".
  • Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, connecting the connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". This can be done by briefly touching the door striker pin, for example.

Install in reverse order of removal and note the following:

  WARNING

Repairing pyrotechnic components (for example the airbag and seat belt tensioner) incorrectly increases the risk of unintentional deployments when the battery is connected.

  • The ignition must be on when connecting the battery.
  • For personal safety when connecting the battery, stay out of the deployment area of the airbag and maintain a distance from the seat belt tensioners/seat belts.
  • Make sure that there are no other people inside the vehicle at the time when the battery is connected.

- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on. Refer to → Electrical Equipment; Rep. Gr.27; Battery; Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.

  Note

If the Airbag Indicator Lamp -K75- indicates a fault, check the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory, erase it and check it again using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

Installation notes, for example tightening specifications, replacing components. Refer to → Chapter "Overview - Front Thorax Airbag".

Rear Thorax Airbag with Igniter, Removing and Installing

  • Bolts - Front Thorax Airbag with Igniter

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • Pry Lever -80-200-

Removing

  WARNING

  • Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to → Chapter "Safety Precautions for Pyrotechnic Components".
  • Follow the additional safety precautions when working with the thorax airbag. Refer to → Chapter "Additional Thorax Airbag Safety Precautions".
  • Follow all regulations when disposing of pyrotechnic components. Refer to → Chapter "Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units, Storing, Transporting and Disposing (Pyrotechnic Components)".

- Disconnect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on. Refer to → Electrical Equipment; Rep. Gr.27; Battery; Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.

- Set/fold the backrest forward; move the rear seat slightly forward if necessary.

- Unclip the side sill backrest hinge cover -1- at the position shown in the image using the -80-200- in direction of -arrow A- and remove downward in direction of -arrow B-.

- Disengage the cover -1- on the metal bracket in direction of -arrow-.

- Disengage the cover molding -1- along the outside of the backrest in direction of -arrow-.

- Pull back the cover slightly.

  WARNING

- Release the connector lock -2- with a small screwdriver in direction of -arrow-.

- Disconnect the connector -1- on the thorax airbag igniter.

- Carefully push the cover with the cushion in the area of the thorax airbag as far to the side as possible.

- Remove the bolt -1-.

- Disengage the thorax airbag -2- with the hooks -3- from the backrest frame -4-.

- Remove the thorax airbag downward from the pocket sewn into the cover.

  WARNING

Set the airbag down so the impact cushion faces upward.

Installing

  WARNING

  • Follow all safety precautions when working on pyrotechnic components. Refer to → Chapter "Safety Precautions for Pyrotechnic Components".
  • Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, connecting the connector), the person handling it must "discharge static electricity". This can be done by briefly touching the door striker pin, for example.

Install in reverse order of removal and Note the following:

  • Make sure the connectors are pushed in all the way and that they engage audibly.
  • Make sure the wires are not pinched.

  WARNING

  • The ignition must be on when connecting the battery.
  • For personal safety when connecting the battery, stay out of the deployment area of the airbag and maintain a distance from the seat belt tensioners/seat belts.

- Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on. Refer to → Electrical Equipment; Rep. Gr.27; Battery; Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.

  Note
